In response to a question raised at the Rajya Sabha, Sonowal said: “BCCI is an autonomous body registered under the Societies Act. It is not feasible for the Government to take over and run the day to day activities of BCCI."

Sonowal, however, acknowledged the fact the government is well aware of the issues surrounding the Indian cricket board and is trying to bring the BCCI under the Right To Information Act (RTI) act so that they can monitor the progress and hold them accountable when such controversies arise in the future.

He said: “Several controversies about BCCI regarding allotment of franchisees, match fixing, betting etc., reported in sections of print and electronic media, have come to the notice of the Government. Various agencies of the government namely the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax and Service Tax Department have conducted inquiries into the allegations of the irregularities involving the BCCI in the country.

“The Government has also formulated a draft of the National Sports Development Bill to bring all the National Sports Federations and the BCCI under the RTI Act with the provision of exclusion clause of protecting personal/confidential information relating to athletes.”
