Some fans will remember that Jane the Virgin actress Bridget Regan was announced to appear on Batwoman as the new Poison Ivy. But they may have gotten understandably confused when Mary (Nicole Kang) ended up infected by Ivy’s plants and essentially became the villainous nature lover herself. However, it turned out that the real Poison Ivy/Pamela Isley is still out there, and now a short new promo from The CW now offers the first glimpse at Regan as the terrifying (and likely very angry) adversary.

The teaser gives special attention to both Regan as Pamela and Nick Creegan as Marquis Jet, yet another newly-established villain for season 3. After joining the show as the half-brother of Ryan Wilder/Batwoman (Javicia Leslie) and the son of Ryan’s long lost biological mother (played by Robin Givens), Marquis stealthily moved his way into Ryan’s life before the big reveal that he suffers from deranged tendencies after a previous encounter with The Joker back in the day. The most recent episode ended with him taking over Wayne Enterprises from Ryan by force, leaving a lot of uncertainty in her immediate future.

It seems that both antagonists have their share of connections to the heroes that span well beyond even the scope of the Batwoman series, which is bound to introduce plenty of that superhero drama that The CW loves so darn much. Aside from Marquis’ connection to Ryan, Pamela Isley shares a romantic past with the newly introduced Detective Renee Montoya (played once again by Gotham’s Victoria Cartagena), which explains her own particular obsession with finding the deadly eco-terrorist. Based on the promo, it looks like Montoya may have gotten her wish, for better or worse.

The promo features a monologue from Creegan’s Marquis, laying out some overt hints that he’s building himself up to be the new Joker. Given how The Joker has always been Batman’s most famous and intertwined nemesis, it certainly seems like Batwoman wants to go the poetic route by making the hero’s own half-brother into the next version of the iconic villain. Marquis’ chilling laugh at the end of the clip only seems to further cement that idea.

However things turn out, things are definitely about to get even more tense on Batwoman. As Ryan races to rescue her friend Mary from permanently becoming a thrall to Poison Ivy’s whims, she must also deal with her own family who seems hell-bent on destroying every aspect of her life. If nothing else, this certainly feels like some classic weird DC Comics conflict.

Batwoman season 3 will return January 12th, 2022 on The CW.
