The reasons behind Ruby Rose’s departure from Batwoman are still somewhat unclear, but it seems that the show wants to do right by the character regardless. As it happens, one of the main plot points of season two will be about Ryan Wilder, the new Batwoman, trying to find out what happened to Kate Kane.

This somewhat mirrors the plot of the first season, in which Kate Kane’s Batwoman tried to find the answer to Bruce Wayne’s disappearance, but is interesting as it leaves some doors open. Dries made it a point that she didn’t want to enact the “bury your gays” trope in which LGBTQ+ characters are often killed off in fiction.
What this will look like for the show going forward is currently unclear. It could be that Rose makes a return at some point, even in the form of a cameo, or that her character is recast later by some plot device within the show. Either way, it is nice to see that Dries didn’t just slap a new face on Kate Kane or kill her off.
Batwoman won’t be killing of Kate Kane.
